Seoul City Improv (SCI) has performed over 40 shows since it began in July of 2007 and now it’s going international. On the weekend of April 24-25 a hand full of SCI members will be boarding a plane and making their way to Taiwan where they will be performing a combined show with local expat improv comedy group, Taichung Improv.
To prepare for their journey SCI will be having a special fund raising show on April 3rd at Roofers in Itaewon. The show starts at 9PM and lasts around 90 minutes with a ten to fifteen minute intermission. The money raised will go toward reducing travel and other expenses accrued. “There was some talk that fresh stove top popcorn might even be available to purchase during the show.” said SCI member Kevin Brenneman.
Both improv troupes utilize short-form improv, where each scene ranges from three to five minutes in duration. It is in the style of the popular television series “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” where games provide a set of guidelines in which the actors try to follow. Often before each game the audience is asked to participate by providing one or more details of each scene, such as a person, place, thing, relationship or interesting quirk. The actors must incorporate these variables into the scene, thereby creating dialogue, mime, and the plot extemporaneously.
To get to Roofers take exit 3 from Itaewon Station, walk straight, and take the first right after Dunkin’ Donuts. Roofers is located on the third floor, a 1-2 minute walk up the hill on the right, across from King Club and the Foreign Food Mart.
Seoul City Improv rehearsals are usually held one or two times per week, but the times and location can very.
